Hashtags are essential to the success and growth of your social media platforms.
They allow others to discover your page, which in turn will increase your followers.
But did you know there are hashtag strategies that you can use?

1. Start with your current Hashtags
Sometimes it’s overwhelming and you don’t know where to start.
I recommend opening notepad on your phone and typing all the hashtags or keywords that you are currently using for your business.
This is a great starting point and you can expand your search from there.
2. Research. Research. Research.
This will be the most time consuming process, but I promise it will pay off.
Take those hashtags or keywords above and start entering them into the search bar of Instagram or your social media channel.
For example, I typed #marketing then a list of similar hashtags will show up below.

You can also see how many posts have been done for each of the hashtags.
What I like to do is click on hashtags and start browsing the top photos to see what hashtags they are using.
You don’t want to use all the top hashtags, as it would be difficult for you or your business to stand out with a smaller following.
3. Using Hashtags
How Many Hashtags?
There are many opinions on how many hashtags you should use.
I read one post that said 11 hashtags is the optimal number, where 9 hashtags is the optimal amount for boosting engagement.
The maximum number of allowed hashtags is 30 per post. Like others, I say use as many relevant hashtags as you can.
Where to place Hashtags?
In the post or in the comments? While there are mixed reviews, here a few things to consider.
- If you have a large following, waiting to post your hashtags in the comments could be pushed to the bottom as others may quickly post their comments.
- If you post your hashtags within the text, be sure to add some spaces below to allow enough room.
- If you post hashtags within the post, Instagram will give you a warning when you reach your 30 hashtag limit.
4. Hashtag Sets
Based on the themes of your post, you can start to create hashtag sets.
These are themed hashtags for photos. For example, a restaurant may have food, drink, and restaurant hashtag set for their posts.
You don’t need to recreate the wheel each time. Add these hashtag sets to the notes of your phone, copy them and add them to your post.
I always modify the hashtags slightly to ensure they are relevant to the photo being posted.
5. Experiment
Try out different hashtags.
Especially when you are first starting out.
Test a variety of different hashtags and this will help you to understand which are working best for you.
Summary
In Summary, hashtags are essential to the growth and success of your social media accounts.
Taking the time to research and create a list of hashtags for your business/personal account, will save you time down the road.
